Yankee Ingenuity Skidder Feeder
Ralph
and Ann Jones, owners of Bean Falls Farm in Bancroft, Maine, have created a large, inexpensive,
workable, round bale feeder. They would like to share this innovation with their Highland
friends.
The sequence of making the feeder is shown in these photos.
Photos 1-5: Cut the sidewall out of one side of the tire using a reciprocal saw, NOT a chain saw.
In the remaining sidewall of the tire, make several one-inch holes for water drainage, plus
a three-inch hole in the center of the tire tread to aid in picking up the feeder with a
bale-spear to move it from one location to another.
Photos 6-8: Once in position, fill with round or square bales---and as can be seen in the photos,
Nora and Rose are enjoying this innovative invention.
You can use a smaller tire for goats and sheep.
Ralph and Ann hope this feeder idea is useful to readers of the Maine Highland Cattle Web page.
